Thin-Section Deep-Groove Ball Bearings

High Precision for Radial, Thrust and Combination Loads

For the demanding environment of satellite applications, performance and reliability are critical. Solar array panels require precise positioning control with minimal vibration and starting torque. Timken® deep groove ball bearings provide the necessary design and accuracy to enable smooth mechanism operation. In addition, the low-profile design is ideal for smaller, lighter applications - saving space and weight.


Modern guidance systems require a highly accurate detection of position. The tight tolerances of standard Timken deep groove ball bearings help meet the exacting specifications of these systems, enhancing overall success. Deep groove construction fulfils multiple application requirements. This series is designed for moderate speeds and loads in any direction. Numerous size, material and separator options are available to match specific customer needs. Timken's advanced thin-section bearing technology gives designers of precision equipment robust solutions for compact space requirements and similar challenges.

Thin section features precision tolerances - meet ABEC 5 or 7 (ISO P5 or P4) standards for better fit with high running accuracy and consistent operation. Material selection - performance options of 440C stainless steel or 52100 chrome steel offer corrosion resistance in challenging environments. Superfinished raceways provide a smooth surface finish of < 0.08 μm (3 μin) Ra to reduce internal friction and vibration. High-quality ball complement delivers smooth rolling performance with Grade 5 or better balls optimized for minimum non-repeatable run-out and low torque.


A broad size range provides unique thin-section designs and superior performance up to 300mm (12 in.) outside diameter in standard product.


Compact size - saves weight and space for both bearing and mating components, helping to reduce overall envelope dimensions. Duplexing capability matched pairs further increase capacity and stiffness. Low torque design minimizes friction and helps to reduce energy input requirements.

Deep Groove Bearings

Timken's thin section deep groove ball bearings are available in sizes from 16mm (5/8 in) OD to 300mm (12 in) OD. Raceways are superfinished for reduced internal friction and provide reduced vibration. The deep groove design supports loads in the radial, axial or combined direction and is capable of moderate load capacities. Standard ring material offerings are 440C stainless and 52100 chrome steel with PFTE spacers. Other ring, ball and separator options are available for specific application requirements.

Timken Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Timken deep groove ball bearings are available in a variety of sizes and are the most popular of the roller bearing range. This type of bearing supports radial load and a small degree of axial load in both directions simultaneously. Timken deep groove ball bearings are popular due to their versatility, affordability and capability to run at high speeds.

Antifriction offer Timken deep groove ball bearings in a wide range of sizes and configurations. Size range from 3mm - 160mm bore and maximum outside diameter of 250mm. Timken continues to expand the offering of deep groove ball bearings with larger sizes to be introduced.


Timken Deep Groove Ball Bearing Types

There are several series of deep groove ball bearings that have been standardized by bearing manufacturers. The boundary dimensions for standard metric bearings are contained in the general plans as specified in ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard 15:2011 for radial rolling bearings.

The Timken offering includes standard, thin section, narrow, wide, extra small and miniature constructions. Those are offered in several variations including the following:

Ball Bearing Cages

Cages (also referred to as retainers) make a vital contribution to overall bearing performance. They maintain uniform ball spacing in the bearing as the balls pass into and out of the load zone.

Timken Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings are uniquely designed to manage both thrust and radial loads on rotating shafts and in housings. Timken manufacture nearly 26,000 tapered roller bearing combinations in single, double and four-row tapered roller bearing configurations. Customised geometries and engineered surfaces can be applied to these tapered roller bearings to further enhance performance in demanding applications.

Tapered roller bearings consist of four interdependent components: the cone, or inner ring; the cup, or outer ring; the tapered rollers, or rolling elements; and the cage, or roller retainer. The taper angles allow the bearing to handle a combination of radial and thrust loads. The steeper the cup angle, the greater the ability of the tapered roller bearing to handle thrust loads.
